Running your own credit report, Good or Bad?

Yesterday I was having a conversation with a buyer of mine and they are working on credit repair. They mentioned that their plan was to visit a free credit reporting online service and see if they could buy a home. I explained that while this is often a good tool to indicate where your credit currently is, it is not the optimal and best indicator of your creditworthiness for a lender. Instead why not connect with a reputable experienced lender who will guide you in the loan qualification process and not just pre-qualify you. They also use a FICO model that is slightly tweaked to better assess risk for their particular industry.  Often this service does not cost you and is a better means of reaching your ultimate goal of a home loan. If you do not have a lender you can contact me for a referral.
